St. Antony’s Shrine, Uvari

Uvari is famous for its St. Antony's shrine built 400 years before. A shrine dedicated to St. Antony.  Uvari is the only place in Tamil Nadu that has St. Antony's shrine adjacent to sea. According to ancient Tamil history, people were called Bharathars of the Neithal (ocean) land. Uvari's historical name was Obeer Pattanam which was ruled by the Pandiyan dynasty, before they were converted by Portuguese. The priests, acting as godfathers, gave surnames such as Fernando to all Roman Catholic Bharathars as they were converted by the Portuguese.
